Highly effective and safe COVID-19 vaccines have been authorized for use in individuals 12 years and older throughout the United States. In addition to the negative educational consequences, the loss of in-person education has resulted in reduced mental and physical health for students, has limited access to basic needs such as school-provided nutrition and health care, and has reduced opportunity for intervention for abuse and neglect. Remote learning resulted in poorer educational outcomes for students, particularly those of color. During the 2020-2021 school year, the physical, emotional, and developmental well-being of children of all ages were negatively impacted by school closures and disruptions, as well as the myriad of health and financial effects that the pandemic had on families. Nearly 18 months after the United States first closed schools and businesses to limit the spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), parents still face difficult decisions about what is best and safest for their children’s return to school. Despite the hopes of many, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic continues to create substantial hardships for children and their families.
